Top 12 Mailing Errors

  1. Missing indicia.
  2. Indicia must be 8 pt type and 1/2” tall at minimum.
  3. Opening at the bottom, resulting in the need for double tabbing.
  4. Barcode must be within 4” of bottom of mail zone and 1/2” from lead edge.
  5. Aspect Ratio is off. Length divided by height = between 1.3 and 2.6 to be “automation compatible”.
  6. Varnish or stock prohibits ink jetting.
  7. Flat = anything greater than 6.125 x 11.5. Letter = anything under 6.125 x 11.5. Could be up to a .10 cent savings by folding a flat to letter size.
  8. Need 4” x 1” clear space for barcoding.
  9. Contents of a window envelope must meet the “tap test” and address cannot go out of view anywhere, or it can be rejected.
  10. Over 3.3 ounces and it goes up in postage for standard presort (what we used to think of as “bulk rate”).
  11. Color of stock is too dark to be read by post office scanners.
  12. Postcards must mic. out to .009 thick.
